Why Immutable Storage Should Be a Crucial Part of Your Data Protection Strategy
Secure Your Critical Data with WORM as the Ultimate Defense
Ransomware attacks are constantly evolving. Attackers now target not only data in primary environments but also copies stored on online storage volumes, leaving organizations wasting time and money attempting to recover data. Immutable storage prevents data modification or deletion for a defined retention period. By using WORM (Write Once, Read Many), you can create immutable shared folders within your Btrfs storage space, providing an enhanced layer of protection for critical data and significantly reducing the risks associated with ransomware, malicious tampering, and human error.

Protect Your Most Important Data
Not all files need to be set as immutable, but certain information, once created, should never be modified.
WORM is particularly suitable for protecting financial reports, legal contracts, medical records, intellectual property, surveillance footage, and other essential documents that require long-term preservation, helping organizations ensure data integrity and reliability. |

Choose the Protection Mode That Best Suits Your Needs |
Different industries have varying requirements for data security and regulatory compliance. Therefore, ASUSTOR offers two WORM protection modes to meet diverse management needs: |
Balances data protection with administrative flexibility, ideal for general business documents and internal operational data. It provides robust protection while retaining some degree of management control. |
Designed for organizations with strict data retention requirements. Within the retention period, even users with administrative privileges cannot modify or delete protected data, helping organizations comply with government regulations and audit requirements. |
Flexible Protection for Different Workflows
WORM offers two file locking methods:
- Immutable Mode: Files are protected immediately after writing and cannot be modified or deleted within the retention period. This is suitable for legal contracts, financial documents, medical records, and other critical data requiring long-term archiving.
- Append-Only Mode: Allows continuous addition of new data but prevents modification or deletion of existing content. This is ideal for audit logs, system logs, and surveillance recordings that require continuous writing.
More Secure Recovery - More Reliable Data Protection
WORM provides a comprehensive protection mechanism to ensure that data remains in its original state within the retention period, preventing overwriting, tampering, or deletion. Even in the event of a ransomware attack, you can retain an unalterable and trusted copy of your data, providing a reliable basis for recovery and ensuring a more secure data restoration process every time.

ABP and AES
An improper authentication and path traversal vulnerability exists in ASUSTOR Backup Plan (ABP) and ASUSTOR EZ Sync (AES). A local attacker can submit crafted encrypted requests containing directory traversal sequences to perform arbitrary file reads and arbitrary file writes as NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM, leading to full local privilege escalation.
Affected products and versions include: ABP (ASUSTOR Backup Plan) 2.0.7.10171 and earlier as well as AES (ASUSTOR EZSync) 1.1.1.3113 and earlier.
- The issue has been fixed on AES (ASUSTOR EZSync) 1.1.1.7230.
- The issue has been fixed on ABP (ASUSTOR Backup Plan) 2.0.8.7230.
